University of Chicago, Physical Sciences Division Master Plan
To enhance recent investments in a large new research building, the University of Chicago sought a strategic plan for the reuse of vacated space to improve adjacencies/collaborations, and position the Division for "where the Science is going." The master plan for the Physical Sciences Division (PSD) addressed office, laboratory, and core facilities in 15 buildings on the University of Chicago campus. Christner’s process included analyzing existing space utilization, programming for future space needs, and determining the relative condition and "highest and best use" of their existing facilities. The plan included recommendations for space moves within the study area; development of phasing strategies and relative cost scenarios; and contingent plans to address unknown conditions and long-term planning options. The process was broad-based and collaborative with input from across the Division from faculty, staff, and administrators.
