Maryville University, Auditorium
St. Louis, Missouri
The new 23,000 sf auditorium is a two-story addition in a central location on campus. Opposite the University Center, the auditorium addition completes the campus quadrangle and helps to frame a central gathering place. The exterior is designed to blend with the existing buildings on campus to give a cohesive look between old and new.
The auditorium building includes a 450-seat auditorium and classrooms for music instruction. While the windowless volume of the auditorium could have become imposing, its presence is placed in scale by the monumental stair, flanked by a beautiful limestone wall with a coursed Ashlar texture, and the similar feature wall on the opposite side of the entry.
The building creates wonderful outdoor spaces for students to gather in a setting enhanced by permanent seating, water features, and sculptures.
