Cathedral Basilica Campus Development
St. Louis, Missouri
Christner developed plans for the construction of a surface parking lot to serve the landmark Cathedral Basilica and Rosati Kain High School. The project offered the opportunity to unify landscape and signage along the entire block of Lindell from Taylor to Newstead. Two major monument signs anchor the corners and are linked along the boulevard by a low granite knee wall. Planting, lighting, and hardscape are all developed to create a single consistent campus image, visually dominated by the magnificent Cathedral Basilica.
Christner developed the landscape plan, the signage design, and managed the approvals with the city and neighborhood agencies. Designers specified permeable asphalt pavement and reinforced turf parking areas for overflow parking.
The original project first assessed all options for adaptive re-use of an existing multi-family building on the site, the San Luis Apartments. Fundamentally, the sustainable solution for site development would have reused the building and its existing structured parking spaces. Two years of efforts to creatively adapt the building could not yield a financially feasible solution, so the building was torn down. However, the original building on included a fully excavated basement, allowing the project to eliminate land-fill waste while using the available volume for storm water detention.
