Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Siteman Cancer Center Expansion
St. Louis, Missouri
This project was undertaken to significantly increase capacity for medical and radiation oncology in a collaborative treatment environment. The layout of the existing facility (which includes two linear accelerators and is adjacent to an outpatient surgery center) presented a number of challenges in delivering an integrated and welcoming treatment center. The solution is a combination of gut renovation and new construction, with separate entrances for patients, staff, and emergency access. The design focuses on clarity of patient flow with dispersed waiting rooms to serve exam, treatment, and infusion areas. Lab and pharmacy areas are integrated into the circulation path. Design features such as abundant natural light, views to nature, welcoming family respite spaces, and uncongested registration areas help to ease stress, clarify wayfinding, and support a calming experience. Finishes and casework build on BJC HealthCare’s standards for cancer care in creating an environment of warmth and simplicity, with patient choices for privacy or community.
