Following a planning study, Christner designed the renovations for Alton City Hall, located in the Historic Middletown District. Built in 1927, we upgraded the facility to meet the needs of a modern work environment, with the goals of improving the customer service experience, public perception, and the workspace for city employees. We created new open offices, a council chamber, and conference rooms, as well as restoring historic features including the original floors, lighting and woodwork.

We converted the lower portion of a two-story auditorium into a new chamber for the city council. Architectural wood detailing and plenty of natural light create a formal but welcoming space.
The new open-office area is in the second level of the former auditorium. Christner's planners created a layout that is more efficient for City employees and more convenient for residents seeking services.
During a previous renovation, skylights on the second floor were covered over. In addition to reopening them, we restored the original architectural woodwork and large pendant lighting over the main stair.
We left many of the building elements as they were originally, including the main stair. To maintain the character of the building, the original terrazzo floors and intricate wrought-iron railings were restored.
