The desire to consolidate NICU and Pediatric inpatient services into a new Children's Hospital was a key driver of the master facility plan. In the first phase, we renovated 54,000 sf on two floors to accommodate all private patient rooms. On the NICU floor, we situated nurse stations so that each patient bassinet is in the sight line of a caregiver. On the pediatric floor, we distributed nursing stations around pods of six rooms, allowing nurses to be closer to the bedside. Each room has a designated family area with sleeper sofa, so that families are included in caring for their child.

Throughout the unit, our interior and graphic designers created a bright and cheerful setting to appeal to young patients.
The color palette and animal icons used in the renovated underscore the child-focused setting and discourages an institutional feel.
Planners incorporated amenities for families, including sleeper sofas, to encourage inclusion in the care process.
“Touchdown” stations outside of the private NICU rooms give nurses enhanced patient-monitoring capabilities.
Christner's graphic designers created a custom wayfinding system that uses child-like animal icons to identify specific areas within each unit. Carpet tiles replicate a patchwork quilt.
